With the plethora of information out there on what we should be giving our kids to help them grow and stay healthy, it’s hard to know which guidelines to follow. When it comes to your kids and vitamin supplements, you should know that most children do not need extra or supplemental vitamins or minerals. If you base your children’s diet on the food guide pyramid, your kids should be getting all of the essential vitamins and minerals that they require.

However, it can be difficult to control a child’s diet. Children don’t understand what it means when something is essential for their bodies, and they are much more prone to being picky eaters or having poor diets. We all know how hard it can be to get your child to eat their vegetables. If your child is eating a special diet, they might need more vitamins or minerals. These can include vegetarians, children with allergies, or children that have religions which state certain foods shouldn’t be eaten.

The most important thing for you to keep in mind when it comes to making sure that your child has a healthy diet is to ensure that they are getting the proper amounts of the right kinds of vitamins and minerals. If this isn’t happening because of what they are eating, you either have to change what they are eating, or make sure that they are getting the vitamins in another way. Vitamin supplements can be purchased in kid-friendly shapes and flavors, so it shouldn’t be a problem to have your child take them.

Speak with your Doctor or Pediatrician to find out what you’re child needs. It’s best to stick to one source for your child’s requirements instead of relying on views from books, magazines, friends, etc. Your Doctor knows your child’s health best.

There are several vitamins and minerals that are going to be important for your child to have enough of. Iron is especially important because it is needed in children to prevent anemia. This usually happens if children aren’t given enough extra iron after they are six months old. This may occur when an infant is no longer breast fed or formula fed and is consuming cow or goat milk instead. Young and adolescent girls are also at a risk of having an iron deficiency.

Another important thing that children need is calcium. This is something that is completely necessary for healthy bones and teeth. If children are drinking milk and eating dairy products, they are probably getting enough calcium, but if they aren’t, you might need to supplement this in their diets.

There are many options for vitamin supplements out there for your children but before you decide to give them anything see if you can first alter their diet to increase their vitamin intake. Supplementary vitamins are not only an expensive option but some feel that the body doesn’t absorb vitamins outside of food sources anyways. Diet is always the best option to control the vitamin intake for your children.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is one of the more widely known types of anxiety disorders, but in actuality, few people understand how it works. People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, aren’t crazy. They simply have persistent behaviors that upset their daily lives. OCD ranges from very mild to severe, and some have even suggested that everyone has OCD, but it is simply a matter of controlling your thoughts and actions so that you can live a normal life.

OCD, as its name implies, has two main components-the obsession and the compulsion. The obsession is usually a fear or desire, such as the fear of contamination or the desire to be perfect. The compulsion is the repetitive behavior that is a result of the obsession. For example, someone with the fear that a loved one will die may feel a compulsion to always count everything to a certain number. They irresistibly feel as though their loved one will somehow die if they do not count to this number. Obsessions and compulsions can sometimes be relieved with rituals, which may help to temporarily relieve the stress.

Although many people will joke that they “have OCD” when they are nit-picky about cleaning or do something odd, severe OCD is truly no laughing matter. A person who suffers severely from this condition will probably not be able to work, go to school, live alone, drive, or even go out in public.

OCD is chronic, although many people try to hide their symptoms from others and stop the compulsions at the very least. Most people with OCD understand that they are being irrational, but they just can’t help it. What causes OCD to develop in the first place? While many originally thought it was due to childhood environmental conditions, it is now reported that a specific neurological problem may be the cause. More than one factor is probably at work here and although there are treatments, there are no known cures to OCD.

Getting help, however, is very important. With medication, behavioral therapy, and counseling, patients with OCD can truly start to lead somewhat normal lives one again. Talking to your doctor about your OCD concerns is the first step to controlling your life and health. At the very least, talk to a friend. He or she may be able to help you take the right steps toward treating your OCD. This disorder can be devastating, but with a little hard work, one can overcome OCD.

Preventing Food Born Illness

Eating healthy foods will help you to boost your immune system, but what if it’s the foods themselves making you sick? Food born illness can cause food poisoning and a variety of other more dangerous diseases. They are a real threat to our bodies. Luckily, there are a number of things you can do to prevent food born illnesses. Following safety tips when handling, preparing, and storing food is very important.

First and foremost, you should be concerned with the temperature of your foods. When cooking meat, make sure to use a thermometer so you know your meat is reaching the proper internal temperatures. Some meats, like beef, can be served rare safely, but the correct temperature becomes crucial as it kills any bacteria that may be growing on the meat. In the case of burgers and other loaf meats that have been ground and formed into patties, they should not be eaten rare. The bacteria can be found inside the meat as well as on the outside. You will be at risk if you do not cook ground meats for a longer period of time to kill any bacteria.

Chicken is the worst culprit for food born illness so extra care should be taken when cooking chicken. Under no circumstances should chicken be cooked rare or eaten under cooked. When chicken is fully cooked the meat will be white with no signs of pink and the juice will run clear.

After your food is cooked, you should continue to monitor temperature. Simply put, keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Hot foods should be kept at temperatures above 140 degrees Fahrenheit, while cold foods should be kept at temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The range between that is where bacteria can grow. When letting food cool for refrigeration, place in the refrigerator after no more than two hours, and when thawing meals, do so in a bowl or pan in the refrigerator, rather than at room temperature.

Cross contamination is a huge culprit when you are concerned with preventing illness with your food. Cross contamination is basically the moving of bacteria from one dish to another. This happens when you use dirty cutting boards, don’t wash your dishes properly, and use the same utensil for all of your food. If you use a knife to cut raw chicken and then use that same knife to cut your food after it has been cooked, some of the bacteria from the raw chicken will remain on the knife and be transferred to your cooked food. This can make you very ill. Make sure that you are using a clean work space and clean tools whenever you cook. It’s a good idea to label cutting boards so that you use one for meat and a different one for vegetables or breads.

Along with using a clean environment, you should make sure that you wash your hands regularly. Every time you touch raw foods, you should use disinfecting hand soap and hot water to make sure that no bacteria remains on your hands. Making sure that your food is safe is one of the most important parts of healthy eating, so don’t overlook this step the next time you prepare a meal.

Healthy Restaurant Eating

If you and your family love to eat at restaurants, you may think that this lifestyle is not good for a healthy diet. In many cases, you would be correct. However, you can still enjoy restaurants occasionally and maintain your healthy diet. It’s all about making good food choices, which starts with learning about the nutrition you need to stay happy, physically healthy, mentally stable, and active.

When you pick up the menu, start by skipping over the drink section. Although you may be tempted to enjoy a beer or mixed beverage with your dinner, these usually have many empty calories, which is not good for your body. The exception to this rule when it comes to alcohol is wine, especially red wine, which can be fine if you have a single glass and can actually help prevent heart disease for some patients.

Also skip over the appetizer menu, unless it’s to order a side salad. The appetizers at restaurants are usually high-fat foods that are not meant to fill you up and can in fact make you crave even more high fat foods. Examples of these are mozzarella sticks, potato skins, and wings. Instead, simply focus on your main course or, if you must indulge, share a single serving with the entire table of people.

When choosing your main dish, it is of course important that you look at the ingredients of the dish. Anything with cream sauces or high-fat meats should be avoided, and pass up the potatoes or onion rings. Instead order side dishes like vegetables or ask for just the main course when possible.

Remember too that portion is everything. Order off of the lunch menu whenever you can, or ask for a doggie bag right away. Split your meal in half from the start so that you are not tempted to eat the entire thing. These days restaurant portions are usually enough for two or three people.

At the end of your meal, skip over the desert menu, just like you did with the appetizers. Again, you can share a single desert with the entire table if you feel compelled to order something, or split your portion in half. Many fancy desserts at restaurants have more calories than your entire meal, so keep this in mind before you flag down the waitress to put in an order! Of course, on special occasions, it’s alright to cheat a little, but overall healthy eating requires lots of resisting the temptation around you.

Improve Your Spending with a Budget

Your bank balance and the availability of money may fluctuate for you and your family throughout the year. There are ups and downs when we talk about the financial resources and income of an individual or family. In dealing with financial difficulties, there is a need to have the budgeting techniques required to balance things or even out your resources throughout the year, making your finances more predictable and less worrisome. It’s about mastering the art of stretching the capacity of our available money.

Money management is a skill that is useful for large corporations, small businesses, families and individuals. To start your budget it’s a good idea to go over two or three month’s worth of past spending. This will give you a base to work from. One month is not enough because there may be anomalies that don’t occur regularly or spending that may only occur on a bi-monthly basis. If you have the ability to go back and look at your spending for a whole year it would be extremely beneficial. You’ll be able to see any trends in your spending.

If you are creating a budget for the first time there are a few tips to follow to make sure you’re not missing anything.

  • Make a note of all your set monthly expenses like, mortgage payment, rent, utilities, car payment, etc
  • Calculate your net monthly income, meaning your take home income or what you’re actually able to spend. This will be your income less any income or other taxes.
  • Work out your average variable spending on things like food, entertainment, gas, etc.
  • Subtract all your expenses (set and variable) from your income. If you get a negative number you’ll have to go back and rework your variable spending until you hit 0 or higher.

Once you’ve created your budget it’s very important to follow it. In order to do this you have to be realistic. For example your budget for entertainment may be set at $100 a month but this may become difficult around the holidays like Christmas. Since you know you will likely be spending more around the holidays you’ll have to spend less on entertainment at other times of the year. Don’t think you’re able to pull money from other sources to do what you want in December. What I mean is don’t take money from your food allowance to spend on entertainment. Entertainment money can only come from entertainment money so it has to come from other months of the year.

Avoid heavy debt with the use of a budget. A budget will teach you to spend what you have. Taking out a cash allowance each week will help to control your spending. Cut up credit cards or hide them to be used for emergencies only. To track your spending when using cash it’s a good idea to keep a budgeting booklet to write down where the money went.

A good budget will help even out your spending through the year but will also allow you to have access to money for emergencies or rainy days. If you live pay cheque to pay cheque things become very tight and stressful when something occurs that requires unexpected spending. Reduce your stress level by being more aware of your finances, you’ll be much happier.

Crafts with Kids

Are you a parent that finds one of the most rewarding things that you can do with your children is to put crafts together? The people who work with children on a regular basis find crafting is beneficial to both children and adults alike. Crafts teach children to express their creativity and show off some of their skills. There are many crafts out there that are easy and fun and can be done by anyone, even those who don’t think they’re artistic.

You will want to make sure that the craft that you are working on is appropriate for the children’s age and also their skill level. This can be difficult when you are working with a number of children in a classroom setting or when you’re working with your own children if their ages vary. When crafting with multiple children try and find something that is adaptable so that everyone finds the craft fun and rewarding.

When we were children, one of the most basic craft projects we learned to do is coloring with crayons and markers. This is something great to do with children because there are many educational coloring books. To encourage your children to think through their drawings give them something a little challenging, like think of a theme that their picture has to follow. You can also give them a project to work on, like making cards for family members. Grandparents love getting birthday cards featuring drawings from their grandchildren!

You will want to research some fun projects for you to teach your children about the importance of recycling and how they can use recycling to make other objects. Use newspaper, for example, to do paper mache projects or create candles out of old crayons. You can go online or look in craft books to find plenty of ideas on how you can recycle things like tin cans and tissue boxes (things that you would normally throw away) and make beautiful projects out of them.

Safety is paramount when it comes to crafting with children. You will want to keep in mind that your child is still developing mentally and physically. Avoid harmful chemicals that may make them sick or hurt them. Learn what chemicals to avoid and check labels. This is especially important for paints, glues, and clays. Make sure to watch younger children very carefully, as even non-toxic substances can be harmful if they get into a child’s eyes. Children also need to be supervised with using sharp objects or items that produce heat. Supervision not only protects your children but your house as well. Don’t forget that many craft items can be difficult to remove from carpets and walls!

Craft projects don’t have to be expensive, messy or difficult. Crafting with your kids can be simple, but because you are doing them together, they can be extremely rewarding. If you notice that your child is taking a real interest in arts and crafts you may want to get them enrolled in classes so that they can enhance their skills and embrace that aspect of their world.

Helping Kids Through a Divorce

Divorce is a difficult thing for anyone to deal with. It can be very hard on a person emotionally and physically as well. This is especially true for children. They have to have the proper help during this difficult time. They need to know and understand that it is not their fault and that both parents still love them very much. To help kids through this hard time parents have to put aside their anger and resentment so they can sit down and make an arrangement that will be suitable to them and to the children. This is easier and less painful than having to go to court to have them decide your family’s outcome.

You should never keep the divorce a secret from the children. Communication at this time is extremely important. You need to tell them when you make your decision and explain, in a way they understand, what is going to happen. Try to give them notice before one parent moves out so that the child can have the time to deal with it and ask questions. Reassure the child that both parents are still going to be there for them and that nothing has changed in that sense.

Do not put blame on anyone when you are talking to your children. Do not put down the other parent in any way. It is important that the children know that they still have two dependable and trustworthy parents to take care of them. Let them know that it was a mutual decision and that you both did your best to avoid this ending.

Avoid giving your children false hope by making it clear that you are not going to be able to get back together. Tell them that it is not their fault but there isn’t anything they can do to help you stay together. This is important so they don’t feel any pressure to work things out for you. Also make it clear to them where they are going to live and that they can see the other parent any time they want to. You can tell them that there may be some changes in that later on, but it is not going to affect their relationship. Give them the opportunity to ask you any questions that they may have for you both.

Giving the child the right information but not too much information is important. You do not want them to feel anxious or worry about anything that is not their concern. They have to feel comfortable with the news that you told them and give them some time to adjust to the idea. Always make your child feel important and loved. Caring for them may also help you get through this difficult time.

Power Lifting vs. Bodybuilding

Power lifting competitions are comprised of three lifts: squat, bench press, and dead lift. Competitors are put into classes that are determined by different factors like the experience and age and are asked to lift the maximum achievable weight for each of the aforementioned lifts. Training for this type of competition consists of building strength, improving technique and working up to 1 rep max weight for each lift.

On the other hand, bodybuilders are judged on their appearance. More care needs to be taken on how their body looks in certain poses. Training for bodybuilding competitions will be more isolated, working on one muscle or muscle group at a time to achieve maximum definition. Other preparations include body hair removal and tanning to better show off the definition.

Both power lifters and bodybuilders should stick to a healthy diet. It is important to eat enough calories each a day to optimize muscle building while at the same time sticking to the right foods.

Dealing with Dyslexia

Contrary to what most people believe, people with dyslexia do not necessarily have low intellect. There are some dyslexics that have became successful in their chosen fields, like Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Alexander Bell and even journalist Anderson Cooper.

There is no standard treatment for dyslexia, it is based on the person’s need and condition. Once a child is diagnosed with dyslexia, the school where they are enrolled should create an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that would suit the child’s needs. The IEP will provide you with a clear understanding of the disabilities, methods on dealing with it and of course, the objectives of the program.

In a case study performed by the Edmond J. Safra Brain Research Center for the Study of Learning Disabilities in the University of Haifa in Israel, dyslexic college students showed improvements in their memory and reading performance after undergoing brain training.
