Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Most people want to learn a martial art not so that they can fight but to protect them or participate in competition. One of the best styles to learn these days is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because you are able to use your opponent’s size, weight and strength to your advantage. If you want to learn it, here are a few things you should expect with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.Brazilian Jiu Jitsu consists of a system of blocks, strikes, sweeps and throws. When you visit a gym, this will be explained to you by the teacher and he or she will be able to answer any other questions you might have about this martial art.

Just like other martial arts, you have to wear proper attire every time you come to class. The uniform is known as a Gi. For your first class, you don’t have to get one but you will have to when you decide to continue training.

If you come to class wearing shorts and pants, make sure that it does not have belt loops, baggy fabric or extra pockets because this could be dangerous as fingers and toes could accidentally get caught in them and result in injury.

Should you feel like it, you can wear ear guards, knee braces, mouth guards, cup and athletic tape during class.

There are a lot of health benefits you can expect from learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. These include improvements in your physical strength, endurance, flexibility and speed.

But for this to happen, you have to anticipate that you will be experiencing a certain amount of pain. You will get thrown, taken down or held in a position that is very uncomfortable.

No pain, no gain is the best way to describe it but you will learn how to hold, escape and make counter moves so you can fight back even against an attacker that is holding a knife or gun.

If you enjoy Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so much, you can stay and move to another belt class. There are certain requirements that you have to meet to receive the next color. If you fail to pass them, learn where you went wrong and then take the test again.

You should also be expected to follow certain rules in the gym. You have to learn how to properly address the instructor as well as students who are more senior than you.

This won’t be a problem of course if you have had previous martial arts training in another discipline and just want to add this to your belt. Will you have to start over as a white belt? It depends and the instructor will make that decision after reviewing your skills.

For instance, if you are knowledgeable in Aikido or Judo then you will not have to start as a white belt. If you are knowledgeable in Karate or Tae Kwon Do, then you have to start from the bottom.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a lot of fun and you will feel refreshed once you come out of each class. Aside from knowing how to defend yourself, you will also gain self-confidence, self-discipline, self-control and respect for others. So what are you waiting for? Visit your local gym and see if they are offering a class to beginners like yourself. …

No Fad Diet

January 1, 2012 by

So, you want to lose weight. That’s wonderful news! Have you heard about the new diet that everybody’s doing? If so, forget about it. It won’t work…trust me. I got news for all of the charlatans promoting fad diets, their nonsense is doing more harm than good. Don’t worry, this isn’t just a rant against the hucksters out there, some real tips that actually work are coming up.There is no question that the people who follow them can see some amazing results, often in a short amount of time. People then see how well others are doing on the latest fad diet, and decide to try it for themselves. Pretty soon the person who created the fad diet is filthy rich from selling the modern version of snake oil. Their fortune always seems to reach its peak at about the same time all of the dieters start packing on the pounds again. Okay…so, what does work? Let’s find out, shall we?

Fill up. You will never lose weight if you’re feeling hungry all the time. If you do, then when you get around the foods that temp you most, you won’t be able to control yourself. To combat this, practice what some people refer to as grazing. Instead of eating three big meals, spread out your eating in smaller mini-meals throughout the day. By doing this you won’t get too hungry, and as a bonus…your metabolic rate will increase.

Get moving. I’ll be honest with you, I never liked the word “exercise”. The very thought of it just sounds too much like work. So, I fooled myself into doing it by never referring to it as exercise. I call it “activity”, “movement” or say, “time to get moving”. Regardless of what you call it, you need to incorporate more movement into your daily routine. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to burn more calories than you take in. You can do this by reducing the calories in the foods you eat and by burning them off through some sort of movement. Simple.

Do it together. Finding a friend to lose weight with makes it so much more enjoyable. You’ll have somebody to eat at healthier restaurants with, and an exercise buddy. Even more importantly, you will be able to encourage each other when you don’t feel like doing what it takes. While the way to lose weight is simple, it’s not always easy and having somebody there when you need it most will greatly increase your chances of success. There will also be somebody that you will feel accountable to. Even if it’s never spoken, you don’t want to feel like you’re letting your friend down.

So, there you have it. It really isn’t that complicated. Stick with it. Make the changes mentioned above, and add a few more. Don’t follow what the newest fad diet says. It won’t work. Look for something that’s been around for at least a few years. That’s the way to do it. Just think about how great you will look and feel as those pounds start melting away….

Organic Food

January 1, 2012 by

When you head to the grocery store, shopping for products like eggs, meat, fish, milk, and produce can be very tricky. Signs are posted everywhere labeling food as natural, organic, and a number of other things-but what’s the difference, really? Learning what specific names mean can help you decide if you should shell out extra money on a product of it is simply a marketing ploy.

Natural is a term associated with a number of fruit and vegetable products. Typically, this is simply a marketing ploy to convince you to buy the product. After all, all fruits and vegetables are natural, right? Unless it’s a new kind of food that has been developed and processed, the product is natural. What you really probably want is organic. Organic foods are grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers. There are two main benefits to organic foods. First, you are helping the environment because those chemicals are not being introduced into nature. Secondly, you are avoiding ingesting chemicals and are therefore eating more healthy foods.

However, organic products are usually more expensive. If you’re on a budget, skip over organic fruits and vegetables that you can peel, like oranges and bananas. After all, once you’ve discarded the peel, you’ve also discarded the chemicals. Instead, opt for organic items like apples, where you eat the peel. No matter what you buy, however, make sure that you rinse off the food when you get home.

Another tricky label you will see is “no hormones.” This is usually in regards to milk or meat products and is false, since all animals naturally produce hormones. Hormones are what helps an animal (even a human) regulate body organs, have young, and otherwise function. All meat products have hormones. What the labels really mean is that no hormones were unnaturally given to the animal, which is sometimes done to increase milk production. Regardless of hormones, however, the milk and meat is safe for a person and not a violation of an animal’s rights.

Lastly, a label on eggs and meat can indicate if the animal was caged or penned. This does not make a difference in the quality or nutritional value of the meat, but is simply a matter of animal rights. These products may be a bit more expensive, but if you want to make human decisions, that is the way to go. Reading the label and making healthy choices can sometimes be difficult, but learning how to do so can help you make the best choices for you diet.

Get Your Baby to Nap

January 1, 2012 by

If your baby is not napping well during her first few months of life, you may want to try to cut back on the time she is awake by 15 minute increments. If she is getting overstimulated, then she will fight sleep and it will be difficult to get her to nap. The way to prevent this is to watch her “sleepy” cues to make sure that you put her down when she is beginning to get sleepy. Some parents believe that letting their child cry will harm him or her. Fifteen or twenty minutes of crying will not harm your child physically or mentally. Babies will learn to self-soothe and fall asleep by themselves, but only if you let her. It is very important that babies learn to fall asleep by themselves so that they can self-soothe if they awake in the middle of the night. Otherwise, you may have a child that will not sleep through the night for years.

Regular sleep patterns are intermeshed with regular eating patterns, so let us look at the stages of a baby’s life:

Newborn: Your newborn will sleep anywhere from 16 to 20 hours a day, including the naps that he takes between feedings. When your baby has been fed, let him stay awake for a short while and then put him down before he becomes overstimulated.

Two months: At two months and older, your child should be allowed to try to self-soothe during their naptimes and bedtime. Crying is normal when you put your baby down, but it is okay. If he cries for longer than 10-15 minutes, then go in and check on him. Don’t get him up, but pat his bottom or lightly rub his back until he calms down.

3-6 months: At around 3-6 months, your baby will stop taking one of his naps. Usually it is the third nap or late afternoon nap that they do not need as much. He may be a little fussy and may want to take a little nap, but you need to try to keep him up if you want him to go to bed at a decent time and sleep soundly through the night.

16+ months: When your child is between 16-20 months, they usually quit taking the morning nap in favor of a longer nap in the afternoons. Babies this age usually sleep between 10-12 hours a night and take a 2-3 hour afternoon nap.

Ground Rules about Naps:

  1. You decide when the nap starts and ends, not the baby.
  2. When your baby is older than 4 months old, she will wake up crying if she hasn’t slept enough. She might have a dirty diaper, be in a position that is not comfortable, or cold/hot. Fix the problem and encourage her to go back to sleep. Babies that have enough rest wake up happy, talking, and in a good mood!

Fix Your Hangover

January 1, 2012 by

Need some advice on how to fix hangover symptoms quickly and easily? Well, it may be easy but might not be as quick as you would like. The best thing you can do for yourself is take the time to rest and relax if you have over done it the night before. Yeah, yeah, we’ve all said it, “I’m never going to drink like that again.” Uh huh, til next time that is. Why do we do it? Who knows. We think we are having fun but the next morning we wonder why we had so much fun and if it was really worth what we have to deal with now. Headache, sensitivity to light and sound (sound especially), feeling like something has crawled in your mouth and died there, nausea and possibly the worst thing that the human body can do, throw up. Do ya really want to see everything you did last night for a second time? Blech! Icky, nasty, gross! I don’t think so.

When you wake up in the morning after a night of over-indulgence the very first thing you will want to do is clean your mouth. Brush your teeth and rinse with a strong mouthwash, preferably one without alcohol in it. This will not make you feel completely better but it is a good start to fix hangover symptoms.

After cleaning your mouth, drink a glass of cool water. Not too cold otherwise your stomach may cramp and cause you to vomit. Take only sips if you have to and do not slam this first glass of water or you may just be seeing it again very soon. You need to be very nice to your stomach right now or it will rebel against you.

Next, grab some caffeine, hot or cold it doesn’t matter. You just need to wake up a little bit. Do not drink more than a couple of caffeinated drinks because caffeine, like alcohol, is dehydrating and you want to concentrate on hydrating yourself today. Drinking a glass of water every hour or so will be the best thing, along with time, that you can do for yourself today.

To become even more lucid, take a nice, long, hot shower and just let the water cascade over you. I guarantee that when you are done taking your shower you will feel like a human being again. Now it is time to dress in very comfortable clothes and either return to bed and take a nap or relax on the couch. Do not do anything too stressful or exert yourself in any way, if you do you will only exacerbate your symptoms and it will only take longer to feel better.

As soon as you feel hungry, try to eat just a little something. Have some tea with honey and some toast. The honey will help stabilize your blood sugar and the toast with some butter spread on it will help get rid of the nausea you may be feeling. If you are a little shaky it probably means your blood sugar is low so make sure you get that honey into your system to help fix hangover symptoms….

Shy Guys Don’t Have to Finish Last

January 1, 2012 by

Shyness is something that many people experience to different degrees. Some are a little uncomfortable when it comes to meeting new people or speaking in front of a group of strangers. Other people are polar opposites and become debilitated by their shyness. Sadly, these are the men who typically never get a chance to show a woman what they have to offer because they are just too shy to even say “hello.” However, that doesn’t always have to be the case.To begin with, there are many women who simply ADORE shy men. There’s just something about a guy who is terrified to talk to women. He may be one of the greatest looking guys in the room, but he doesn’t know that. Believe it or not, that is, in and of itself, one of the hottest triggers for many women. They will locate this man with their internal heat seeking missiles and proceed to hone in on him. Most of the time, their approach is viewed with much trepidation by the object of their attention, as a truly shy man will be terrified that he’s going to have to talk.

Now, imagine his surprise when he does manage to look at the woman and see that she’s one of the most beautiful looking women in the place. Your first thought should NOT be “why is she talking to ME?” Instead, look at it as an opportunity. Obviously, she sees something she likes or she wouldn’t be standing in front of you introducing herself. Yes, you’re terrified, but please remember that SHE approached YOU and she will most likely be happy to start the conversation and maybe even carry a lot of it. However, you DO need to do your part to participate in the conversation or she’ll think you don’t like her.

If she keeps touching you lightly on the arm while talking to you, ask her to dance. Hopefully, you have learned at least how to do a decent slow dance. You’re not expected to be Fred Astaire, but it does give you an excuse to put your arms around her. This will tell you a lot about what her intentions are.
Smile a lot but don’t leer. Let her know that you’re enjoying her company. This isn’t impossible, no matter how shy you are. Again, keep in mind that SHE came to YOU. Always keep that in the front of your mind so that you can gain some confidence from it. This amazing woman found you interesting enough to walk over to you and start talking. The least you can do is talk back. It’s important that you show her you like her in an unobtrusive way.

When it comes time to part ways, if things have gone well, ask her for her phone number. By then you’ll be able to tell whether or not she’s interested enough to give you her number or not, so it’s not like you’re taking a huge gamble. Remember that she likes you and be brave….

Can You Stay at Home?

January 1, 2012 by

One of the first things you have to figure out when you realize that you want to stay home with your kids is whether or not you can afford to do so. You are probably used to living on two incomes, so making the switch to a single income may not be easy. However, it may not be as hard as you think. If you have children already, the first thing that goes away when you decide to stay at home is the cost of daycare. However, if you work at home, part of that cost may remain, unless your work is such that you can keep the children home with you. Take a look at how much of your income right now is going to daycare. That cost alone may prove to you that you don’t need a high-paying work at home job to stay home – a simpler one may suffice.

There are several other costs that will drop if you stay at home. You’ll be in a different tax bracket. You’ll probably drive less, eat out less often and you won’t need clothes for work, which can save both on shopping and on dry cleaning bills.

When you’re figuring out how much it costs you to work outside the home, don’t assume that becoming a stay at home or work at home parent will cause you to stop eating out. You will have those days where you decide to take the kids out, more likely than not.

One thing many parents forget to think about when they decide to stay at home is to handle retirement planning. Now, if you’re just staying home for a year or two, it’s probably not a big deal, but if you plan on staying home for many years, this can be a huge impact on you when you do retire. You may not have the finances to fund your retirement account well when your family is living on only one income, but you should try to do at least a little.

Use this information to figure out what you will need to earn while staying at home. Some will be fine as a single income family, but others will need the stay at home parent to earn some kind of income. Ideally, this will be a relatively small amount, as the whole point of having a stay at home parent is to have more time with the kids and benefit them, not maintain a freely spending lifestyle. However, if a single income isn’t enough, a work at home job or home business will likely become necessary.

Figure out how much income will be necessary and how much risk you are willing to take. Work at home jobs are harder to come by, but home businesses are by their nature more risky, and it may take a few years to earn an adequate income from a business. Plan accordingly, and know that you might not be able to live your preferred lifestyle right away.

Fortunately, by the time you take out the costs of working outside the home, you will likely find you don’t need to earn what you used to. Half or even less of your previous income may be quite adequate. It may require sacrifice, but that’s what being a parent is about….

Identity Theft Solutions

January 1, 2012 by

It’s unbelievably frustrating, here you are going about your business, being a productive member of society, caring for your family and some lazy thief is trying hard to steal your identity and all you’ve worked so hard for. The good news is that there are identity theft solutions so you can work to stop the thieves in their tracks

  1. Many people used to think it was a sign of pride that their wallet was brimming over with credit cards, the more gold or platinum cards the better. Today, though, we know that more isn’t merrier. It’s a real risk to carry your cards with you so you will be doing yourself a favor by only carrying what you absolutely need.

I don’t even carry my cards on a day to day basis, I only put one in my wallet when I know I’m going shopping, that’s good identity theft solutions.

  2. Keep careful tabs on your credit report. By law you are entitled to one free report from each of the credit bureaus every year. If you divide that up to one a quarter you can keep a good eye on your credit report.

Of course, if you find anything that looks off, make sure to call the credit bureau right away. I have a friend who just got a bill from a company he has never dealt with before. He contacted the company right away since he suspected someone had used his identity.

  3. More and more people are realizing that it’s foolish to sign the back of a credit card. Sure, it says that we should but think about it for a minute: if a thief wants to forge your signature, aren’t you making it easier for them by writing it out.

Instead of signing your cards write “See photo ID” or something similar on the back of the card. That is much better protection for you than signing your name.

  4. Only use one card for purchases made online. Even better, use an online payment source like Paypal. Instead of having several of your credit card numbers floating around in cyber space you can greatly limit your exposure by using only one card or relying on Paypal.
  5. Make sure you get your mail as soon after it’s delivered as possible. Leaving mail in your mail box can be an invitation to thieves to steal it and use that information to steal your identity.
  6. Make sure that you also look over your bank statements and credit card statements every month. This is the best way to spot a problem quickly. If you see anything that looks off contact the bank or credit card company right away.

These are just a few of the possible identity theft solutions. It’s important that we all do as much as we can to protect our identity, not just for ourselves but for each other as well. Whenever someone makes a fraudulent purchase we all pay, don’t think for a minute that the banks and credit card companies are going to absorb those loses, they will just pass them on to us in higher fees….

Aerobic and Anaerobic Exercise

December 1, 2011 by

Exercise is an important component to a healthy lifestyle. This should be something that you already know, but what you might not know is that type of exercise that you are getting is just as important as actually getting it. For a well rounded fitness level you have to do different types of exercise. Aerobic exercise along with anaerobic exercise is the best way to make sure you are getting all the exercise that you need. When it comes right down to it, aerobic exercise along with anaerobic exercise is a great combination. You are getting your heart rate pumping with the aerobic exercise, and strength building with the anaerobic exercise.

Before starting any exercise program, whether it be aerobic, anaerobic or a combination of both you should always consult your Doctor. Your Doctor has your full health history and will be able to tell you what kind of workouts or exercises are suitable and safe. Once you’ve consulted your Doctor to get an idea of what you’re able to do it’s a good idea to seek out a personal trainer. A trainer will be able to set up a program that includes a good combination of aerobic and anaerobic exercise for you fitness level to reach your goals.

Aerobic exercise will help you to build heart and lung health and burn fat, while anaerobic exercise will help you build muscle. The importance of including both types of exercise in your workout program is to ensure that you’re strengthening both your cardiovascular system and your skeletal/muscular system. Anaerobic strength training will also help improve your metabolism to allow your body to burn more calories throughout the day and not just while you’re taking part in aerobic activity.

Exercise programs vary and can be tailored to suit your ability but also your time frame. One option would be to do aerobic exercise on certain days of the week and strength training on other days. This works well for people who are able to visit the gym regularly and have enough time to split their workouts. For others who are more strapped for time it’s a good idea to look into bootcamp style programs that combine cardio and strength into the same workout. Doing a bootcamp workout, which usually lasts 45 minutes to an hour, 3 times a week will give your body enough of both the aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

Any type of exercise that you’re able to do is beneficial to your health but to create an optimal fitness level you need to include exercises that will strengthen your whole body, not just your muscles and not just your cardiovascular system. Many specialists will agree that finding an achievable combination of aerobic and anaerobic exercise will give you the best full body results.

Warming Up

December 1, 2011 by

When you have to fit an exercise routine into your already busy schedule, you might be tempted to simply skip the warm up routine, even though you’ve heard horror stories about people getting injured while working out. Three words: don’t do that. When you skip your warm up, you are not only putting your body at risk for personal injury, but you are also making the workout more difficult and less effective. For the best results, it is important to warm up every time you work out.

Warming up doesn’t have to eat up the time you allotted for exercise into your day. In fact, a decent warmup only has to be 5 minutes long to do its job. It doesn’t have to be boring either-you can mix up a number of great moves to make your warm up as fun as the rest of your exercising. Remember that a good warm up gets all of your muscles moving, even if you don’t think that you’ll be intensely working out a set of muscles on any particular day. Warming up is also important regardless if you’re doing cardiovascular exercises or lifting weights.

The moves you do for a warm up shouldn’t necessarily be difficult or make you break a sweat. The main goal of the warm up isn’t to become a part of your workout, but simply to slowly move muscles that you haven’t really thought about all day to wake them up. Good moves, therefore, include things like jogging in place, doing jumping jacks, lunging, and jumping rope.

A good warm-up can also include slowly stretching your muscles in a variety of ways. Although this is usually more effective for a cool-down. Also consider exercises that work on balance and form in order to prepare you for the exercises you will be doing in the workout.

If you’re really short on time, why not try warming up before you even get to the gym. Slowly jog or power walk to the gym, park as far away as possible and lunge to the door, and take the stairs instead of the elevator. That way, when you get to the gym to workout your warm up routine is already half way done.

A good workout always builds in intensity. This is the best way to shed pounds and maintain a healthy weight. Weight loss workouts are only risky if you don’t warm up, because otherwise your body will respond to prevent injuries. Although you may be tempted to skip this step, that is never a good idea.
